May 17 2018 is the Seventh Annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Lainey Feingold Global Accessibility Awareness DayA Message From Lainey Feingold:

Today is the seventh annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day — a day that reflects the foundations of my work for the past two decades:

Global: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes the right of people everywhere to participate in the online world and independently access information. Accessibility is a civil right / a human right across the globe. It is a great gift of my work to be part of a community of advocates around the world seeking to make this promise a reality.

Accessibility: Accessibility is about making sure that technology and digital content work for disabled people — as both consumers and creators. Structured Negotiation is a strategy and a set of tools that have built relationships and given people with disabilities a voice in finding solutions to accessibility barriers for more than two decades.

Awareness: An important goal of my website, this email list, and my Twitter feed is to raise awareness of digital accessibility, the civil rights aspect of accessibility work, the role of law in the digital access space, and how Structured Negotiation is an effective tool to advance accessibility. I encourage you to forward this email to a friend if you think they may be interested in these issues.

Day: Global accessibility awareness is an ongoing endeavor, but I’m glad we have a single day to showcase it. If you’re new to these issues, I invite you to spend 15 minutes on the web without your mouse to get a quick taste of accessibility issues: can you get what you need with just your keyboard? If not, the content is not accessible.
And if you are already part of the global accessibility community, whatever your role: thank you for making the digital world more inclusive for people with disabilities around the world.

Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day!

Lainey
p.s. My book, Structured Negotiation, A Winning Alternative to Lawsuits, is full of accessibility stories. It is available through Amazon, Bookshare, the National Library Service, and with a 20% discount using Code LFLEGAL20 when purchased on the publisher’s website.

p.p.s. I recently wrote about Accessibility Culture. What better day than GAAD to think about how an increasing number of forward thinking organizations are baking accessibility into their organizations. You can find a link to that post, and to more than 300 others on LFLegal, on the Articles Page of my website.
